Canada’s foreign workers hail from a variety of places across the globe
Statistics released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has given us fresh insights as to where temporary foreign workers (TFWs) in Canada have been arriving from since the beginning of 2020.
The coronavirus crisis has negatively affected Canada’s temporary foreign worker intake, but the country is doing its best to keep the immigration process going. This data shows the details of the new work permits that have been issued to temporary foreign workers eligible for work in Canada under the International Mobility Program (IMP) or Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).
How has TFWP fared?
Canada has issued a little over 33,000 work permits between January and April under the TFWP in 2020. The primary source countries were Mexico, Jamaica, India, Guatemala, and the Philippines.
The Mexicans made up 41 percent of all the TFWs issued. About 66 percent of the 33,000 work permits were given to agricultural workers. TFWP arrivals have reduced by 18 percent overall in comparison to the same period in 2019.
How has IMP fared?
Canada has issued more than 76,000 work permits under the IMP. The top 5 source countries were India, France, China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. About 27,000 of the invitations (36 percent) were handed to Indian nationals. Brazil and South Korea also featured on the list close after.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) acts as a leading stream of work permits that are secured under the IMP. It led to the issuance of 35 percent of the total IMP work permits in 2020.The number of work permits under the IMP has reduced by 16 percent as compared to the first four months of 2019.
